La via del sale
A small bike trip from the hill Tenda to the sea, through the ex-military roads streets. It’s a tour dedicated to lovers of cycling holidays and in general to all sports people on two wheels. There are a lot nature trails that can be appreciate through the historic and scenic route that led from Limone Piemonte, a resort town in the heart of the maritime Alps of Piedmont, to the sea. A pristine path that is in contact with nature and permeated in local history, which makes it a unique experience on top of Alps. Indicated to those who enjoy holidays in MTB, but it can also be a beautiful experience for all bike passionate by hiking and cycling. We organize a tour of a day, taking as a starting and finishing point, Limone Piemonte that allows to appreciate the present historical and cultural connotations of the described place, on a path that is used also for important competitions of MTB. The excursion is suitable for bikers’ average level of training. The climb up to the Central fort is pedaled on land with wrought fund that is not difficult. The descent to Limone Piemonte is an easy one, but definitely fun, with a first stretch of gravel roads or ski slopes and an ending in the woods, with little more challenging trails that are guided.
Built at the time of Charlemagne, “la via del sale” was a strategic point of transit for goods and passengers. The salt, a basic element for human nutrition, took a great economic and commercial importance for Piedmont, from here the name “Via del sale”. However, it is reductive to consider “La via del Sale” only a trade route. It’s functions over the centuries were varied. From political and administrative to military. In fact it was used as borderline between Italy and France. The fortifications of the “Colle di Tenda” is the result of the military work Savoy, dating in 1800. It was restructured during the Fascist era and used during the Second World War to protect the border of the Western “Vallo Alpino”.
